At a Radio Appeal in Newcastle during Ramadan 2012, about £4000 was pledged. The amount included full sponsorship for 13 orphans and partial sponsorship for 10 orphans. With that MNF UK’s Orphan Sponsorship scheme was kick started, from which today many orphans have directly benefited.
Following the above an Orphan Scheme Committee was set up to consider and approve requests from prospective communities. The committee agreed £300 per Annum as the amount required to sponsor an orphan. This amount can either be donated in full to NMF UK or by monthly instalment of £25 for 12 month.
In 2011/2012, fifteen more Orphans were added to the pool following a successful sponsorship campaign at NMFUK Peace conference in Leicester. These Orphans are from Adamawa, Kaduna and Kebbi States of Nigeria. In order to give a spread and following applications received from Enugu, Nasarawa, Oyo, Plateau & Yobe States, 5 Orphans each from these states were considered and approved – (25 Orphans in total).
In 2013/2014, a successful drive to secure Sponsorship for these Orphans were made under The Ramadan Radio Appeal ran by the former Amir Malam Sani Makarfi during Ramadan and under the AGM at Coventry.
This brings the total number of orphans under NMF UK Orphan sponsorship Programme to 73
The Annual budget for this committee with the current number of Orphans stands at £16800 as the table below shows the breakdown.
It is envisaged that to sustain the continuing sponsorship of these orphans, proactive funds raising shall be maintained. The sources of funds shall include the sponsors, mosque collections, Committee fund raising activities and regional chapters.
All requests for Orphan Sponsorship are subjected to vigorous appraisals before any approval.
We call on all our brothers and sisters to consider sponsoring orphans as this is one of the highest virtues of faith. Suggestions were made as to how NMF UK can secure sponsorship for its orphans.
One good suggestion has been for the local chapters to join hands together and sponsor one orphan. With at least 11 active local chapters, we will be able to provide full sponsorship for 11 orphans at £300 per Annum each.
Alhamdulillah London, Leeds and Cranfield Chapters are currently sponsoring 4 orphans.
The Prophet SAW said, “I and the person who takes care of an orphan will be like this in Aljannah. And he joins his 2 fingers together”.
“They ask you what they should spend (in charity). Say: Whatever you spend that is good, Is for parents and kindred, and orphans and those in want and for wayfarers. And whatever you do that is good, Allah knoweth it well”.
